Kewaunee Wisconsin Lighthouse
The Kewaunee Wisconsin lighthouse and harbor area make a good stop to look for birds, ducks, and eagles in winter. We normally make a couple of trips during the winter months along the Lake Michigan shoreline to check out the ice and wildlife.

Heading along the lakeshore on Highway 42, which runs north/south through Kewaunee you can’t miss the Kewaunee Wisconsin lighthouse. It is a short drive down Ellis Street. |

Kewaunee Lighthouse History
The Kewaunee, Wisconsin lighthouse was built to replace the signal lantern system they had installed for aid in harboring vessels from Chicago to Green Bay and to provide a protected harbor in times of bad weather.
You can walk out on the pier and look straight up at her if you want. Just be careful when the Lake is rough or the pier is icy.
Ludington Tugboat
Ludington tugboat is docked along the pier in the harbor and the ducks enjoy hanging out along the bow.
Ludington is a World War II-era tugboat built in 1943 at Jacobson Shipyard in Oyster Bay, New York.
The U.S. Army designated the tug LT-4. The tug’s armament consisted of two 50-caliber machine guns and participated in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, towing ammunition barges across the English Channel. Tours are offered seasonally.
Racine Tugboat
The Racine tugboat was built in 1931 by Marine Iron & Shipbuilding for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
It is based in Kewaunee, WI, and performs various jobs around Lake Michigan with her fleet mate Kenosha. On occasion, you can see both in the harbor.
Ice Volcanos
Ice does all sorts of crazy things on The Great Lakes. One of those crazy things is creating ice volcanos.
Ice volcanos form when the air temperature is just right and high winds create waves that break through the bottom of the ice hugging the shore. This causes water and slush to squirt up onto the surface of it creating mounds of ice around the hole. Each time the waves reach the mounds the water squirts up creating an eruption.
Wildlife
Some pictures from over the years. The harbor area normally doesn’t freeze solid in the winter and you will find a variety of winter birds. Bring binoculars, most are not very close to shore.
Worlds Tallest Grandfather Clock
On your way out of town, be sure to stop and see the world’s tallest grandfather clock that site at the foot of the Annepee State Trail in Kewaunee, Wisconsin.
In 1883 Joseph Svoboda an emigrate from Prague built a home and church-furnishing factory in Kewaunee, Wisconsin.
This 35′ 10″ grandfather clock was built in 1976 for America’s Bicentennial Celebration by the Svoboda Industries.
